Surge in 'Military' Nonprofits in Russia Uncovered by New Investigation Amid Escalating Conflict.

RUSSIA

Ecent investigative report by Novaya Gazeta Europe has shed light on a significant rise in the number of nonprofit organizations in Russia dedicated to supporting soldiers and draftees. This surge has been observed since the commencement of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The surge in nonprofit registrations began during late 2022, coinciding with Moscow's announcement of a mobilization drive. According to the investigation, during the first half of 2023 alone, a total of 505 nonprofits with names implying involvement in military or "military-patriotic" activities—such as fundraising for soldiers or veterans—have been officially registered in Russia. This figure represents an increase of approximately 34 percent when compared to each of the preceding two years.

The fiscal impact of these organizations in 2022 was substantial, with at least 113 billion rubles ($1.2 billion) raised—a surge of 28 percent in comparison to 2021. It's important to note that this financial estimate excludes funds raised by the new entities registered towards the end of 2022.

As the conflict escalates, these findings provide insight into the growing efforts to rally support for military personnel within Russia.
